Glasgow Museums has a substantial collection relating to the history of Glasgow and the surrounding region. It comprises approximately 120,000 objects, which date broadly from the 17th century to the present. This collection reflects both the daily lives of the city’s inhabitants and Glasgow’s political and civic history. It relates to domestic and personal life, working life, women’s history, health, religion, education and leisure. In addition, the collection represents civic history, war, politics and popular protest, communities and people and places. The objects are diverse. They include paintings, prints, drawings, maps and ceramics; domestic, office, educational and medical equipment; books and leaflets; flags, medals, awards, banners and other commemorative objects; architectural fragments and street signs; furniture and furnishings; various costume and accessories, including religious vestments and other religious objects; sporting memorabilia including autograph books; police items; clocks, watches and bells; musical instruments; and an array of transport-related items, notably including the Spitfire LA198 Spitfire from the No. 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron. The collection also encompasses a supporting archive of documents, pamphlets and press clippings, and an extensive photographic and oral-history archive.
