Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 4,000 objects related to Scottish history. These date from about 300 to the present. This collection represents Scottish political, economic and social history and comprises many types of material, ranging from precious metals and paintings to wood and bone. Among the most valuable objects are Jacobite correspondence, glass, snuff boxes and works of art. Unique items in the collection include examples of man-made objects from the islands of St Kilda. The collection is divided into four groups – Scottish government and nobility, Jacobites and Hanoverians, banking, and rural life. Provand’s Lordship, which dates from the 15th century, is a rare example of a medieval Glasgow building. It is now a museum and displays collections that are of great interest to Scottish history, and which complement the collection's unique assemblage of over 40 King James IV coins.
