Glasgow Museums has a significant collection of over 13,000 objects related to religion. These date from 1200 BC to the present. This collection encompasses major parts of the human history and art collections. It represents Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism, and other religions such as the Baha’i Faith, Jainism, Rastafarianism and Zoroastrianism. The collection itself is diverse and includes objects such as coins and tokens, ritual items, sculptures and statues, paintings, prayer flags, rosaries, thangkas, musical instruments, books, textiles and metalwork. Many of these objects are internationally significant, such as Salvador Dali’s painting ‘Christ of St John of the Cross’. Many other objects have great significance for the communities to which they relate, and their importance is therefore judged within a community context. Through its religion collections, Glasgow Museums seeks to promote inclusion and interfaith dialogue.
