Glasgow Museums has a collection of about 1,680 transport and engineering models. These date from the year 1800 to the present day. This collection encompasses a diverse range of transport and engineering models. The largest grouping is of ship models, mostly Clyde-built. These include sailing vessels, warships, merchant ships and other craft such as tugs, ferryboats and dredgers. Marine engineering was also of major significance on the Clyde, and models of engines – from side-lever to steam compound to diesel – form an important element in this collection. Most of the railway models come from railway sets. The light rail transport models consist of a small number of Glasgow tramcars. These represent the vehicles and the various routes they used between 1888 and 1962, when the city’s tram network was closed. The collection of road transport models mostly comprises horse-drawn vehicles, although a few Glasgow motor buses are also included within the group. The collection also includes aeroplane and aerospace models, representing civil airliners, Space Shuttles and experimental hypersonic Wave Riders.
