Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 2,000 objects related to rail transport. These dates from around 1830 to the present day. The focus is primarily on Scottish railways, Glasgow locomotive builders and Glasgow tramways. This collection is made up of vehicles, engineering equipment and other objects, paper material and models relating to Scottish railways, Glasgow trams and the Glasgow Subway. The tram collection comprises seven Glasgow Corporation trams, covering the years 1898 to 1962, and represents the major Scottish railways and Glasgow locomotive builders. Also included in this collection are engineering equipment and infrastructure items. The railway collection boasts seven locomotives, while the Glasgow Subway collection contains three subway carriages, which were used from 1898 to 1977. Objects and architectural features from the former Merkland Street Station have allowed for the re-creation of a subway station, dated around 1977. There is also a large collection of railway models which contains several detailed scale locomotives as well as toy train sets and buildings. Additional items include street furniture, ticket machines, driver badges, tickets, timetables, photographs, blueprints and engineering drawings. The dates of this collection are 1830-2014.
