Coins and Medals

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of coins and medals that date from 200 BC to the present. This collection comprises a range of geographically diverse material that can be described broadly as currency and trophies. Much of the collection is made up of modern items, including a significant amount of currency from the 19th and 20th centuries, and sporting awards and communion, trade and transport tokens from the same period. The collection also includes a small amount of Egyptian and Parthian coinage from the 2nd century BC, Ancient Greek and Roman coins, Islamic coins and medieval coins from Scotland and England. Scottish, British and European coinage is well represented. There is also some coinage from world cultures, including Chinese Tibetan and British Empire coins, a large collection of Latin American coins from the 19th and 20th centuries, and currency from the American Civil War. In addition, the collection holds a range of Scottish commemorative medals and military medals. These include military prizes and reflect the development of the British Empire.
