Scottish Glass

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 900 items of Scottish glass, which date from 1750 to 1990. This collection comprises examples of blown and moulded glass, various methods of engraved and painted glass, and late 20th century art glass. Domestic drinking glasses and tableware, vases, bottles and ‘friggers’ – glass novelties in the shapes of animals and other objects – reflect the rise of the Scottish glass industry in the 19th century and its early collectors. The collection represents a wide range of glass manufacturing techniques employed by Scottish glass manufacturers during this time, especially those based in Glasgow. Important manufacturers include Jenkinson's Norton Park Glassworks in Edinburgh, John Baird of Glasgow and James Couper’s City Glassworks in Glasgow. The earliest pieces in the collection are 11 engraved Jacobite drinking glasses from the mid 18th century. Late 20th century pieces include art glass, paperweights and sets of tableware produced between about 1974 and 1990, among them work by Alison Kinnaird, Paul Ysart, Alison McConachie and John Lawrie.
