Road Transport Models

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 28 road transport models. These date broadly from the 19th and 20th centuries. This collection comprises 18 horse-drawn and 10 Glasgow electric tramcar models. The horse-drawn models range from a governess cart, a farm cart, commercial carts and hansom cabs – all with two wheels – to four-wheeled caravans, passenger carriages, trams, omnibuses and fire engines. These models are made from a variety of materials, including matchsticks. Several models incorporate horses and people, and one horse was made specifically to display a harness. Some of the models, such as an award-winning fire engine, a clarence carriage, a phaeton carriage, and a cart carrying four barrels, are finely made. The Glasgow electric tramcar models represent vehicles used from 1888 until the closure of the tram system in 1962. The collection includes one horse-drawn vehicle, some toy models and some large-scale detailed reproductions. Most models are identified by their route destination boards. Significant items include a particularly fine two-wheeled horse-drawn cart model made by William Craig around 1898. It shows the horse in the shafts while the cart itself is carrying barrels. Another noteworthy model is in the form of a tramway and railway layout, with working trams, a train and street lights, made by W Neilson around 1950.
