Jacobite and Hanoverian Coins and Medals

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 55 Jacobite and Hanoverian medals and coins from Great Britain, Ireland and Europe, which date from 1689 to 1759. This collection includes gold, silver, bronze and copper medals and coins. The Stuarts are commemorated through medals and coins made for James VI and I, Charles I, Charles II, James VII and II, James Francis Edward Stuart, Charles Edward Stuart and his younger brother, Henry Stuart. The Hanoverians are represented by numerous medals and coins struck for George I, George II and his consort Queen Carolina, and the Duke of Cumberland. The Hanoverians succeeded the Stuarts as monarchs of Great Britain in 1714. Jacobitism was a political and military movement that opposed the reigns of King William and Queen Mary, Queen Anne and then the succession of the House of Hanover. It supported the restoration of the Stuart monarchy to the British throne. The medals and coins representing both the Hanoverians and the Stuarts were struck to commemorate and to extend power and influence through propaganda.
