European Textiles

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 5,000 European textile items from about 1220 to the present.

This collection comprises woven, printed and embroidered textiles from Scotland, Britain Isles and continental Europe. Early textiles include the internationally significant collections of medieval and Renaissance tapestries and embroideries in the Burrell Collection.

Other collections include woven and embroidered cloth samples purchased from the International Exhibition of Science, Art and Industry held in Glasgow in 1888, samplers, lace and quilts. West of Scotland textile industries are represented with Turkey Red cloths, patterns and trade labels, and the Stoddard-Templeton collection of carpets, rugs and carpet samples. Internationally significant Glasgow Style textiles include embroidered items by Jessie Newbury and Ann Macbeth. In addition, there are textiles produced by later teachers and graduates of The Glasgow School of Art.
