Modern period Archaeology c.1500-c.1945 AD

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a large collection of archaeological objects that date to the Early-Late Modern period, from circa 1500 AD to the Second World War. This collection consists of a wide range of material from domestic, industrial and ecclesiastical contexts including post-medieval, handmade pottery and significant holdings of pottery sherds and clay tobacco pipes from many of Glasgow’s industrial potteries and clay pipe factories dating back to the mid-18th century; excavation assemblages from fieldwork undertaken across Glasgow such as in the High Street area; on the site of the Franciscan Friary, and in connection with the M74 motorway extension. There is a large assemblage of finds from excavations in the historic core of Ayr. Included within this collection chronologically, although they are not archaeological artefacts per se, are approximately 116 Victorian plaster casts of Early and Late Medieval sculptured stones and a number of good quality 19th-early 20th century replicas of Early Medieval Irish reliquaries and brooches.
