Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 800 objects related to health care in Glasgow. These date from 1800 to the present. This collection includes photographs, paintings, watches, medical equipment, personal testimonies, trophies, commemorative artefacts, ephemera, paper, books, pamphlets, badges, spectacles, tiles, a dentist’s chair and housing tickets. The most significant part of the collection is the National Health Service mental health collection. This comprises about 350 items that represent 200 years of mental health service provision, from the establishment of Glasgow asylums to NHS Trust status. There are also items from early 20th century chemist shops, physicians’ equipment and instruments, nurses’ badges and some dental and ophthalmic equipment.
