Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 5,000 objects related to the people and places of Glasgow. These date from 1670 to the present. This collection encompasses paintings, watercolours, prints, drawings, maps, sketches, Tassie medallions, photographs, books, glass slides, negatives and sculpture. Topographical views of Glasgow include the works of John Knox, Thomas Fairbairn, Andrew Donaldson, Andrew MacGeorge, Sam Bough, David Small, William Simpson and Alasdair Gray. Photographs of the city date from the mid 19th century and include volumes of Thomas Annan’s photographs of Glasgow taken for the City Improvement Trust. Photographic surveys of the city notably include the 1955 Glasgow Photographic Survey undertaken by Glasgow camera clubs and the Partick Camera Club themed photographic surveys of the 1970s and '80s. The collection also includes images of ordinary and influential citizens, such as James Watt and the tobacco lord John Glassford, and portraits, memorabilia, correspondence and documentation associated with the Dunlop family from the 17th to 19th century.
