Viking and Late Norse Artefacts

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of Viking objects, which date broadly from 800 to 1200. It comprises about ten boxes of material. This collection predominantly comes from the west of Scotland, although other areas such as Caithness and Ireland are also represented. It encompasses an array of artefacts and items of particular archaeological interest and value, such as a plaited gold ring from Skye, a 10th century Ingelrii sword, an unusual fragment of carved stone bearing a motif executed in Anglo-Scandinavian style, and a number of copper alloy ringed pins. The largest and most significant component of this collection is the material originating from the excavation at Drimore, South Uist, in the Western Isles. The assemblage contains a range of bone and antler objects including a decorated comb of early Viking type, fragments of steatite bowls, steatite spindle whorls and dress pins, and faunal material including whale and fish bones.
