Glasgow at War

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 4,000 items related to the effect of war on the people and city of Glasgow. These date from 1745 to 1990. This collection encompasses the Spitfire LA198 from the No. 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron, a World War II food demonstration vehicle, arms and munitions, badges, medals, uniforms, helmets, armbands, and regimental and king’s colours and banners. It also contains gas masks, ration books, identification cards, paintings, drawings, etchings, photographs, letters, postcards, leaflets, ephemera, utility clothing, and blackout material and other items related to precautions against air raids. In addition the collection has some material related to the Glaswegian involvement in the Spanish Civil War and in the anti-war and peace movements. Part of the collection documents the experience of being involved in warfare, and in particular the Spitfire LA198 is accompanied by personal histories from men of the No. 602 (City of Glasgow) Squadron. Other significant items include Marianne Grant’s paintings of Nazi concentration camps, Ian Fleming’s drawings of the effect of warfare on Glasgow’s streets, items related to James Keith Gorrie’s war service and letters associated with the occupation of Glasgow by Prince Charles Edward Stewart during the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion.
