Glasgow Communities

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 2,000 objects, dating from 1767 to the present that represent Glasgow’s diverse communities. This collection relates to Glasgow’s Gaelic, Jewish, Irish, Italian, Chinese and South Asian communities. It includes items such as clothing, textiles, swatches and pattern books, and paintings, drawings, prints, posters. It also contains leaflets, photographs, ephemera, ceramics, trophies, medals, badges and oral histories. The collection includes the furniture and fittings from the Rendezvous Café, the Crolla family’s chestnut roaster, a plaque relating to Lascar seamen and regalia from organizations such as the Orange Order, Hibernian Order and Irish National Foresters. Immigrant communities have greatly influenced the development of Glasgow over the past 200 years. This collection addresses their contribution to the wider culture and development of the city, specifically through community identities centred around religious, ethnic and culinary culture.
