Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 15,000 items associated with domestic and personal life in Glasgow. These date from 1850 to the present. This collection represents topics such as housing and home life, heating and sanitation, and cleaning, shopping and food preparation. It also relates to eating, drinking and tobacco consumption, social life, marriage, birth and birth control, and childcare and childhood. Further objects are connected with disability, poverty and homelessness, death and burial, emigration and immigration, and crime and punishment. The collection illustrates a society changing in response to 19th industrialization, urbanization, overcrowding and unhealthy living conditions. Objects include items from the Scottish Wholesale Co-operative Society, photographs of 19th century Glasgow, and personal testimonies. Of particular note are items associated with housing, such as Thomas McGoran’s paintings of living in a single end (a small tenement flat) in the 1930s, and Thomas Annan’s photographs of 1866 for the City Improvement Trust.
