Jacobite and Hanoverian

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of around 464 Jacobite and Hanoverian objects. These date from 1680 to 1750. This collection encompasses prints, paintings, sculptures, wine glasses, cutlery, ceramics, snuff boxes, a musical instrument, furniture and costume and textiles. It also contains wartime correspondence and arms and armour of the period, such as basket-hilted swords, dirks, targes and flintlock pistols. In addition, it holds related archives dating from 1715 to 1746 and coins and medals celebrating the Stuart cause of the 17th and 18th centuries. The collection includes significant assemblages of objects that are indirectly connected with other areas of political support for the Jacobite cause, such as a collection of plates made by the Edinburgh goldsmith Edward Penman. The Hanoverians succeeded the Stuarts as monarchs of Great Britain in 1714. Jacobitism was a political movement that opposed the House of Hanover and supported the restoration of the Stuart kings to the thrones of Scotland and England.
