Glasgow Museums has a collection of about 100 Scottish medals. These date from 1700 to 2000. This collection comprises medals commemorating monarchs, cities, institutions, sports, rural industries, famous people and particular events such as Queen Victoria’s Jubilee or the Abolition of Slavery Act. In addition to reflecting military, social and political events, the collection also illustrates a broader historical narrative – the collection of 28 Jacobite medals is particularly useful as a record of the activities of the Stuart family, and the military medals commemorate Britain’s Imperial and European wars. The collection also includes 17 medals awarded, during the 1930s and 1940s, to celebrate the acts of individuals, such as Chief Constable of the City of Glasgow Police Sir Malcolm MacLeod MacCulloch. Great Scottish exhibitions and museums are commemorated by medals made in the 1890s and early 1900s, and there are also medals made for agricultural festivals.
