Fish

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of around 2,500 fish specimens. These date from the late 1800s to the present.

This collection is mainly representative of Scotland and the north-east Atlantic. Its core scientific strength is a large number of deep-water specimens from off the west coast of Scotland, many of which were collected on board the research vessels RSS Challenger and Walther Herwig from depths of over 3,000 metres. These were obtained as part of a proper scientific survey and so they have accurate location details and full specimen data, including accurate depths, temperatures and salinity. The majority of the specimens are preserved in liquid, but there are also dried specimens, some osteological specimens (skeletons and skulls, including jaws, teeth and otoliths (ear bones)), mounted specimens and painted casts. In addition, there are some scales, egg cases and a few unusual items such the famous ‘Endrick Pike’ head. Several fish in the collection are Scottish records.
