Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of around 790 items that relate to shipbuilding. These date from 1812 to 1989. This extensive collection contains a wide range of material covering all the main aspects of the shipbuilding process. Most of the important shipbuilding firms, such as J&G Thomson, Napier, Denny’s, John Brown’s, Fairfields, Elders, Stephens, Yarrow’s, Lithgow’s, Scott’s and Tod & MacGregor, are represented. Objects include specifications, letters and contracts, plans, tools, company histories, rigging and portholes as well as items relating to launches, unions, training and apprenticeships. Also included are objects from various Clyde-built ships. In addition, there are a number of artworks by Muirhead Bone, Norman Wilkinson and Fred J Girling. The collection also has a large number of professional and amateur photographs. In addition to working and decorative ship parts are half hull, plating, testing and exhibition models. These represent an important element in the process of shipbuilding. There are also a range of tools and equipment from drawing and testing instruments to riveting and welding gear. Launch items include a section of drag chain, shipyard company flags, launch gavels, pilot vessel and tug launch flags, and souvenirs such as brochures, tickets and other ephemera.
