Stationary Engines and Electrical Power

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 64 items that relate to stationary engines and electrical power. These date broadly from the 19th and 20th centuries. This collection includes steam engines, hot air engines, oil and gas engines, electric and hydraulic motors and dynamos, and experimental engines. Also included are various models representing these types. Steam engines include ones used as feed pumps; a centrifugal pumping engine for water circulation; a hydraulic motor; a steam-blowing engine; and a Robey horizontal uniflow steam engine. Among the hot air engines is a possible 'Heinrici' of about 1880 and another made by Ericsson around 1840. The collection has one gas engine made by Otto Langen and Crossley of Manchester, and a single cylinder horizontal 'hot bulb' ignition oil engine made by Allan Bros. of Aberdeen. Electricity generators include three turbines: a Mavor and Coulson water-turbine generator set and switchboard installed at Ellary in 1896; a Parson's turbo-generator set, manufactured in 1889; and a Gunther water turbine, which was built about 1860.
