Commercial Vehicles

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 17 commercial vehicles dating from 1910 to 1979. This collection contains seven heavy goods vehicles, including an Albion A10 lorry, converted from road use to rail; three Albion flat-bed lorries; a converted Austin van; a fully restored Caledon Model ‘E’ lorry; and a Morris BMC Open Truck No. 1. There are also six light goods vehicles, including an Austin mobile kitchen, a Morris post van, an Albion and a Bedford ice cream van, all of which were used to deliver and sell goods. Also making up this part of the collection are an electrically powered Smith’s Elizabethan, which was used to deliver milk by Wiseman, and a Daihatsu van, acquired for a Glasgow Museums Asian art project in 1997. Other vehicles include two difficult terrain vehicles: a Steyr-Puch Haflinger 4x4 703P and a Stonefield 3000, which were used by private and utility companies during the 1970s. In contrast, made solely for interior use are an Empolini Tricar and a Ransomes & Rapier mobile crane. The collection also encompasses five internal combustion engines which were produced by Rolls-Royce, Caterpillar and Albion for commercial use. Another two Albion engines were made for display purposes. There are also accompanying catalogues, brochures, parts and awards.
