Disability Transport

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of 16 items related to disability transport. These date from the 19th century to the present. This collection consists of items used as a means of conveyance by people with disabilities, to move both indoors and outdoors. All are of British manufacture with the exception of the Parapodium, which is European. The vehicles include a hackney taxicab, the disabled-access taxi MCW Metrocab No. 1, a three-wheeled AC Model 70 invalid car of 1935, a ‘Dove’ tricycle made by Howie Therapy Cycles of Cumnock, Ayrshire, and an award-winning Mekong wheelchair. There are also several other bath- and wheelchairs, including one used at Glasgow Central Station to assist disabled passengers. The walking aids consist of numerous walking sticks, several callipers and the Dynamic Parapodium that acts as an exoskeleton by providing side struts and hip, knee and foot bracing. Of particular significance is the litter of 1887, which represents the first wheeled ambulance apparatus used in Scotland (at Cowlairs) by the North British Railway.
