Buses

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of three Glasgow Corporation Transport Department (GCTD) buses, together with other related items. The Corporation (now known as the Council) operated its own transportation services from 1893-1972. Motor buses were operated from the 1920s and electric trolleybuses from 1949-1967. There are two motor buses and one trolley bus in the collection and these date from 1948 to 1967. In addition there are various associated materials from roadside signs, time tables, uniforms, tickets and maps. The collection dates from the 1920s until 1972. This collection contains two double-decker motor buses and a single-decker trolley bus. The double-deckers are an Albion Venturer EGA 79, built in 1949, and a Leyland Atlantean, of the type introduced in 1958. The single-decker trolley bus is a TBS 12, dated 1958. Associated with the vehicles are sections of bus engines, such as a gearbox and a torque converter. A number of bus-stop and fare-stop signs relating to bus travel are also incorporated within the collection. Working life on buses is represented by uniforms and several ticket machines used on Glasgow Corporation Transport Department (GCTD) vehicles. Documents include GCTD regulations, tickets, route maps and timetables, and photographs of Glasgow buses. There are also 18 albums representing an eclectic collection of photographs of buses from around the United Kingdom. In addition, the collection encompasses model buses, including models of two horse-drawn buses and a particularly fine reproduction of a wooden Glasgow Corporation Transport (GCT) bus from 1947.
