Glasgow Museums has a collection of more than 250 objects related to Hinduism. These date from about 1200 BC to the present. This collection encompasses ritual objects, including puja equipment, and personal items of devotion such as miniature shrines, metalwork, images of deities, carved woodwork and textiles. The collection mostly originates from the Indian Subcontinent and reflects the shiviate and viashite traditions. It holds representations of the incarnations of Vishnu, and various forms of Shiva including his symbolic form as a lingam and an image of him as both male and female. The collection also includes a large set of decorated clay figures from the Bengali community, which are used in Durga puja. These images represent Durga, Ganesha, Kartekeya, Lakshmi and Saraswati. In addition, the collection has a small devotional sculpture of the Jain Tirthankara Mahavir Swami. The collection also contains photographs of the Hindu community in Glasgow. These include images of the Hindu Mandir – or place of worship – at Great George Street in 1992, the procession to the new temple in La Belle Place in 1995, and various community and religious festivals including Dussehra and Durga puja.
