Camden Town School, the Vorticists and the Slade School

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 200 works by around 50 different artists which date from between 1890 and 1960. This collection represents figures from the influential Camden Town School, Slade School and Vorticists, working in Britain during the early 20th century. The collection contains good works of particular importance by some of the main proponents of these movements including Walter Sickert, Stanley Spencer, Percy Wyndham Lewis, William Roberts and Mark Gertler. The majority of objects are prints on paper although there are some strong examples of painting on board, canvas and paper and a few examples of sculpture. Most of the artists represented are male, which is indicative of the lack of visibility for female artists of this period, although we have some objects by important female practitioners such as Vanessa Bell.
