European Sports and Leisure Wear

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 250 items of European sports and leisurewear dating from the early 1600s to the present day, with the vast majority made from 1900 onwards. It comprises specialist sports and leisure clothing and accessories that have been designed to be worn by people participating in all manner of sports and leisure activities.

The largest group is bathing, beach and swimwear, but there are also a number of cycling, motoring and riding and hunting wear. In addition, there are items worn for cricket, falconry, football, motorcycling, skating, skiing and tennis. The earliest pieces are falconry accessories from the 1600s, including a significant set used by James VI of Scots and I of England (1566–1625). There are also a number of items related to major sports events, including a number of outfits associated with the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
