Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 300 items of costume worn by both professional and amateur performers dating from the late 1800s to the present day. These include items worn by actors, dancers and musicians, in the theatre, on television or in films, as well as outfits worn for fancy dress.
The largest collection relates to Dance and includes items worn by Mabel Delroy (1889–1973), a dramatic dancer who performed regularly in Austria between 1913 and 1921, and outfits from Scottish Ballet. There are several outfits worn by leading Scottish singers, Sydney Devine (1940–2021) and Lulu. Theatre costumes include several from an early 1910s comedies by Graham Moffat (1866–1951). Film and TV costumes include a Paco Rabanne minidress worn by Audrey Hepburn (1929–93) in Two for the Road, 1967, and an outfit worn by Robbie Coltrane in the BBC Scotland television series Tutti Frutti, 1987. Fancy dress costumes include a number of items of historical dress that were adapted for fancy dress use as well as bespoke outfits, including a fabulous Cleopatra worn by Lady Ure Primrose in 1903. The most iconic items are Billy Connolly’s famous banana boots.
