English Sculpture to 1600

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 120 English sculptures which date from between 1130 and 1600. This collection comprises sculptures made from stone (alabaster) or wood, mostly with religious-themed subject matter, which were made in England or attributed to makers working in England. There are two main groups of items which make up the bulk of this collection, the most important of which consists of 43 alabaster sculptures made in Nottingham. Many of these are panels depicting religious subjects carved in relief, which would once have formed part of church altarpieces. Notable items include four examples of domestic shrines featuring panels with the head of St John the Baptist. Three of these still retain their rare original painted wooden housings. A large painted plaster and wood panel depicting the Arms of King Edward VI is also a rare survival. The rest of the collection consists, predominantly, of carved wood sculptures, most of which are architectural fragments.
