Penguins

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 40 penguin specimens and several eggs. These date from 1874 to 1982.

This collection includes 15 mounts, three skins, one skull, two skeletons and 19 eggs. The collection represents seven species of penguin – emperor (Aptenodytes forsteri), king (Aptenodytes patagonicus), rock hopper (Eudyptes chrysocome), blue (Eudyptula minor minor), Chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarcticus), gentoo (Pygoscelis papua) and jackass (Spheniscus demersus). A few of the specimens originate from zoos, while most others come from Antarctica, New Zealand, Patagonia, and Chile. The eggs in the collection are of significance, having been collected during the 1902–1904 Scottish Antarctic Expedition led by the oceanographer Dr William Spiers Bruce.
