Pigeons

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of more than 100 pigeon (Columbidae) specimens, and numerous eggs. These date from 1872 to 2006.

This collection includes at least 41 mounted specimens, 96 skins, five skeletons and one dissected specimen in spirit. Most of these specimens are from Scotland, although there are also examples from England, Malawi, the Gold Coast, Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Madagascar, India, Malaysia, Chile, Suriname and Guyana. The highlights of the collection are examples of the extinct passenger pigeon (Ectopistes migratorius). There is one mount in the Poltalloch Collection and one skin in the Stewart Collection.
