17th Century European Women's Wear

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 15 items of seventeenth-century European women's dress dating from 1600 to 1700. This collection, the majority of which is in the Burrell Collection, is significant as examples of women's clothing from this period are particularly rare and items that do survive are often expensive, high quality accessories representative of the wealthier and more important members of society.

Most of the items date from 1600–20, such as an important embroidered linen jacket, a group of coifs and a very rare embroidered silk pettcoat panel. There are also a few items from the late 1600s, including a fan painted with scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses.
