18th Century European Dress Accessories

Glasgow Museums has a small collection of over 30 eighteenth-century European dress accessories dating from 1700 to 1800. These are predominately women's, with a few men's and infant's accessories and include fans, shoes and lace accessories as well as a few examples of stomachers, pockets and purses.
Accessories from this period are relatively rare. The pieces in Glasgow Museums' collection were worn or carried by the lesser gentry and middle classes, whose families may have retained them for their sentimental value. Some accessories have also been acquired from collectors who were interested in their decorative qualities, including examples of lace accessories purchased by Sir William Burrell (1861–1958) and his wife Constance, Lady Burrell (1875–1961), which form part of the largest groups of accessories. There are two small groups of footwear and fans, with the latter including a painted example by Francesco Petilli that was probably bought originally as a souvenir or gift from the Grand Tour of Europe.
