Glasgow Museums has a collection of 88 motorcars. These date from between 1898 and 1994, and include vehicles from the six manufacturers producing cars in Scotland from 1900 to 1927 This collection consists of: 19 veteran cars built between 1898 and 1918; 22 vintage cars built between 1919 and 1939; 28 classic cars built between 1940 and1975; and 19 modern cars built between 1976 and 1994. Two other cars are unregistered and consist of a “cut and shut” and a crashed vehicle. The collection also includes nine engines, of which two, produced by Scottish manufacturers, are experimental – the Robertson two-stroke petrol engine of 1935 and the Anderson engine. Noteworthy items include three Albion cars, eight Argylls, a Beardmore, four Arrol-Johnston cars. The collections’ Galloway car is the only example of its kind on public display in the UK. More common models are the Austin 7, Morris Minor and Vauxhall Cavalier. The collection also includes a Stanley steam car, built in 1919. Supporting material includes car parts, accessories, photographs, costumes, professional correspondence, periodical articles, and automotive press releases. Of particular importance are the George Oliver collection and the Royal Scottish Automobile Club collection.
