Glasgow School of Art and Glasgow Style Textiles

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 200 textiles associated with the teachers and students from The Glasgow School of Art which date from 1899 to the present. This collection predominantly contains textiles produced in the Glasgow Style. There are over 45 pieces designed or produced between 1899 and 1920, and about 90 pieces produced between 1920 and 1970. Needlework items include hangings and panels, domestic linen such as tablecloths, tea cosies, cushion covers, bedcovers and small drawstring bags. There are also costumes, an altar frontal and a draught screen. The Glasgow School of Art's needlework and embroidery section, established in 1894, held international recognition for excellence under the instruction of Jessie Newbery and Ann Macbeth and the collection well reflects their work and the influential legacy of their teaching. Other needleworkers working in this tradition represented in the collection include Ellison Young, Jane Younger, Eliza Kerr, Muriel Boyd, Christine McLaren, Mary Newbery Sturrock, and the sisters Annie, Grace, Jane and Mary Begg. Later alumni of The Glasgow School of Art whose work is included in this collection include items by Kath Whyte, Head of Embroidery and Weaving from 1948 to 1974, and Alistair McAuley and Paul Simmons' Timorous Beasties. The collection also boasts some documentary items including photographs, certificates, correspondence, awards and one of Jessie Newbery's sketchbooks.
