European Woven Textiles

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of woven textiles which date from 1301 to the present. This collection includes woven textiles such as tapestries, hangings, brocades and velvets. These items represent a range of techniques from woven cloths used to make items of clothing or furnishings to artistic items. The most significant group of woven textiles are the tapestries, the majority of which are held in The Burrell Collection. The largest group of tapestries, both in scale and number, includes works from France and the Spanish Netherlands. Other regions represented include England, Germany and Switzerland. The collection also has a group of Italian cut velvets and an interesting group of damasks and brocades, ranging from early Italian Renaissance samples through to English 18th century pieces and 20th century cloths made for both dress and furnishing. There are also a couple of late 20th century tapestries and a group of woven hangings made by textile artists, such as Sarah Sumsion.
