World Cultures and Outsider Art

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of Outsider Art and world cultures art. This collection contains approximately 32 works, encompassing the George Murray Collection, purchased in 1994, and 20 paintings by Outsider Artists from Britain. Of the world cultures art, the Aboriginal works, which were created with methods that have changed very little during the past 40,000 years, are particularly popular. Outsider Art is made by artists who are either not specifically trained to defined standards or from the same racial, cultural and social background as those who become professionally empowered to define art within society. World cultures art refers to contemporary art made in non-Western countries, such as art by the indigenous people of Australia or Papua New Guinea. This category also includes art from Russia and Korea. Some of the world cultures collection can also be considered Outsider Art.
