The Hutton Rooms Furniture and Interiors

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of furniture and interiors from the Hutton Rooms which date from between 1200 and 1930. This collection includes the furniture and interiors of three rooms from Hutton Castle in the Scottish Borders which was Sir William and Constance, Lady Burrell's family home from the late 1920s. These rooms, accurately reproduced in the Burrell Collection, are the Dining Room, the Drawing Room and the Hall, collectively known as the 'Hutton Rooms'. Each of these vaguely medieval-themed rooms has been recreated from photographs taken at Hutton Castle, using the original furnishings in their original positions. This style of interior decoration was common in the homes of collectors of medieval artefacts at the time. The rooms feature stone fireplaces and architectural woodwork, including an important set of linenfold panelling in the Dining Room. There are also stained glass windows, wooden and upholstered furniture of various styles and dates, oriental carpets, tapestries, sculptures and decorative items from the collection. Each room contains specially commissioned medieval-style electric lights and soft furnishings. The 'medieval theme' approach, along with the additional use of contemporarily commissioned items such as lighting, was not particular to Burrell, and has been adopted by other collectors in Europe and USA. A few minor changes have been made to the contents of the rooms for reasons of security or conservation.
