Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 2,000 fossil fish. This collection contains examples from a wide variety of locations and geological ages. Most of the material is from Scotland, with good collections of fish from the Silurian, Devonian and Carboniferous Periods. There is also a wide range of different fish, with specimens representing the major groups from primitive jawless fish to modern bony fish. A large part of the collection comprises Scottish Devonian fish, which are mainly from localities in Orkney, Caithness, the Moray Firth area and Fife, with a few examples from other sites. Another major part of the collection consists of fish from the Carboniferous, for the most part from localities in central Scotland. There is also a small but important collection of around 50 specimens of Scottish Silurian fish, such as Birkenia and Logania, all from famous localities near Lesmahagow, Lanarkshire. Among other fossil fish in the collection are Jurassic and Cretaceous fish, including shark and other teeth.
