Skuas, Gulls and Terns

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 325 specimens of skuas, gulls and terns, plus numerous eggs. These date from 1850 to 2005.

This collection includes cabinet skins, mounted specimens and skeletons of around 44 skuas, 200 gulls and 82 terns. Most of the specimens are from Scotland or other parts of Britain, although there are also examples from the Faroe Islands, Canada, Greenland, the USA, India, Africa, Australia, Hungary, Germany, Sardinia and the Netherlands. Some of the specimens from the Cochrane and Poltalloch Collections date from the mid-1800s, and many others date from the late 1800s to the mid-1900s. Highlights of this collection include the first British record of a Bonaparte’s gull (Loch Lomond, 1851) and the first British record of a noddy tern (Aberdeen, 1873).

Skuas (Stercorariidae), gulls (Laridae) and terns (Sternidae) are all seabirds that are part of order of Charadriiformes.
