Mosses and Liverworts (Overseas)

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 1,400 moss and liverwort specimens from Europe, Africa, the Indian subcontinent, China, North and South America and New Zealand and Australia. These date from 1819 to 2002 and consist of dried moss or liverwort samples in small packets. The Glasgow Museums civic collection (GLAM) contains a total of about 1,225 specimens, including the significant collection of James Stirton, which comprises 426 specimens of mainly European material, with contributions from Professor Schimper, Dr I Hagen, J E Zetterstedt and P G Lorentz. Other important collections include South American specimens from Richard Spruce and Dr Faulds. The University of Strathclyde collection (GGO) contains 244 specimens, some of which are associated with the travels of collector John Scouler around 1825. The collection also contains a book of pressed mosses, entitled ‘Holstein Collection of Cryptogams’ and dated 1819, by J Booth. The Glasgow University (GL) overseas collection is housed by the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
