Models of Fishing Boats

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of models of vessels involved with the fishing industry around the coast of Scotland and the wider British Isles. Fishing was a major industry throughout the eighteenth, nineteenth and early 20th century, mainly concentrating on line fishing for cod and drift/trawl net fishing for herring. Many of our models were made by men directly involved in the fishing industry who had an intimate knowledge of their vessel’s construction and use. There are 20 models in total and most represent traditional Scottish sailing fishing vessels from the East and North East Coasts and mainly date from the 1880s to the 1950s. There are examples of the Skaffie, the Fifie - such as the model named Agnes Duncan - and Zulu from the East Coast. Faerie Queen is an example of a Loch Fyne Skiff from the West Coast. There are also models of the four and six oared fishing boats from the far north of Scotland, Orkney and Shetland, such as the sixereen made in the 1870s by David Henry of Guthorn on Foula, Shetland. There are also models of steam-powered and motor-powered vessels such as Dover, and models of two ships involved in fisheries protection work in UK waters.
