Models of Harbour Vessels

Glasgow Museums has a small collection of models of vessels related to the operation of harbours and docks. Harbours and docks are a crucial part of maritime trade, the point where cargoes are transferred on to and off vessels, a place where crews can rest and where vessels can be repaired. There are nine models of harbour tugs, ranging in date from 1878 to 1961, which were essential for moving vessels into and out of harbour areas, one model of a tender that maintained buoys in river channels and one model of a small ferry of the type used in Glasgow Harbour. There are three large dioramas showing dock areas and their infrastructure (Princes/Queens Dock, Rothesay Dock, as well as an undeveloped proposal for the area around King George V Dock on the Clyde), and a model of a floating dry-dock intended for use in areas without dry-dock facilities for ship repair. This is in addition to the collection of models of dredgers and hoppers which were so critical in developing and maintaining harbour and dock areas.
