Glasgow Gaelic Community

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 20 items related to Glasgow's Gaelic community which date from between 1833 and 1990. This collection holds a variety of items including two photographs of Hope St Gaelic Church, 19th century communion tokens from the Gaelic Free Church in Partick, the Govan First Gaelic Church and the Gaelic Chapel in Glasgow and a long-handled collecting bowl from the Gaelic Free Church in Duke St. It also contains a Gaelic hymn book from St Columba's Church in St Vincent Street, a list of office bearers in the church dating from 1861, and a brass clock presented to Dean Hutchieson by the Gaelic Mission Society in Glasgow in 1884. There are also two Boys' Brigade drumsticks with 'Carlton Gaelic' stamped on the side and a leaflet relating to events running in Glasgow during 'Glachu 1990'. The collection has a further small number of educational books relating to teaching Gaelic-speaking children, although these may have been used out with the Greater Glasgow area.
