Glasgow Irish Community

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of some 400 items related to Glasgow's Irish community which date from between 1881 and 1992. This collection comprises paintings, photographs, badges, posters, programmes, music sheets, musical instruments, regalia, ceramics, banners, leaflets and cards. It includes material from the Friendly Society, the Irish National Foresters' Benefit Society and clubs such as the Springburn Hibernian Swimming Club. Alongside this there are objects that reflect musical traditions and personal objects such as the Gilmartin's marriage bottle, decorated to reflect their Irish origins. The identity of the Irish immigrant community was largely shaped by religion and items of a sectarian nature include Hibernian and Orange Lodge artefacts. The collection also holds items related to Sir Thomas Lipton, a second-generation Irish immigrant. Although the material in this collection was not collected specifically to record the Irish communities it does provide an insight into Irish cultural identity in Glasgow and reflects the existence and legacy of Irish immigration to the city.
