Childhood and Childcare

Comments

Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 1,500 objects relating to childhood and childcare in Glasgow which date from between 1790 and 2000. This collection comprises cots, cradles, prams, high chair, food tins, feeding bottles, weighing scales, bracelets, brooches, badges, medals and certificates. It also contains christening gifts, mugs, cups, spoons, leaflets, cards and an empathy belly, as well as numerous paintings and photographs. A significant element of the collection is the belongings of Margaret Hutchison which were packed away into a suitcase following her death on Hogmanay in 1925/26, aged only seven years old. These objects, kept by her mother and sister in memory of her short life, give a unique insight into the life of a working class child in Glasgow and how one woman coped with the loss of a child at a time of high infant mortality. Paintings, drawings and photographs also provide a powerful record of childhood and childcare in Glasgow. Thomas McGoran's paintings give a glimpse of a 1930s childhood recorded over a half a century later. Artefacts from organisations such as the Band of Hope, Boys Brigade and Girl Guides, are also included in the collection.
