Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 800 items related to love, sex and marriage in Glasgow which date from 1777 to the present. This collection contains portraits, photographs, wedding invitations, certificates, cards and notices of banns. It also holds favours, cake decorations, receipts, rings, brooches and badges. The collection also includes mugs, bottles, teapots, wedding gifts, valentine cards, contraceptives and wedding and engagement costumes. Valentine cards feature heavily in the collection and mainly cover the mid-19th to early 20th century. There are also a few love tokens, such as the Glasgow Cycling Club race medal of 1898 that was made into an engagement present. The collection of marriage mugs and bottles, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, are marked with the couple's names and often decorated with symbols of love and fidelity. The majority of the objects in the collection are linked with personal histories. Some of these items relate to silver, diamond and ruby wedding anniversaries while others celebrate same-sex relationships and sexual identity.
