Glasgow Museums has a collection of approximately 1,500 items relating to Glasgow celebrities that date from between 1840 and 1997. This collection comprises portraits, prints and drawings, clothing, trophies and awards, photographs, theatre bills and programmes, leaflets and other associated ephemera such as newspaper cuttings and tickets. The people represented are well known Glaswegians in the areas of entertainment and sport. They include comedian and actor Billy Connolly and performers Rikki Fulton, Chic Murray, George West, JA Wilson, Lulu, Matt McGinn and Jimmy Logan. It also includes footballers Andrew Cunningham and Jimmy McGrory, boxers Benny Lynch and Elky Clark, and street entertainer 'Old Malabar' (James Feeney). It further includes football manager Sir Alex Ferguson, champion cyclist Tommy Chambers, Orpheus Choir founder and conductor Sir Hugh Roberton, writer and artist Alasdair Gray, broadcaster Tiger Tim, and theatre managers and impresarios John Henry Alexander and AE Pickard. Many of the objects in the collected have been gifted to the museum either by the personalities or by their families and associates.
