Glasgow Museums has a collection of over 2,000 objects relating to sport in Glasgow which date from between 1782 and 2005. This collection contains sporting trophies and medals, sports equipment, banners, clothing, books and leaflets, vehicles, memorabilia, photographs, drawings and other art works. These items represent events such as the Special Olympics and the Monte Carlo rally as well as sports clubs and societies, school sport, municipal sport and sport in hospitals. They cover a wide range of sports, principally yachting, cycling, boxing, football and bowling. Other sports and activities represented include motor sports and rallying, swimming, winter sports, shooting, fowling and fishing, athletics, cricket, outdoor pursuits, dog-racing, snooker, golf, racquet sports, rowing, canoeing, quoits and hockey, among others. Famous sportsmen represented include Sir Thomas Lipton, the millionaire grocer and yachtsman, boxers Benny Lynch and Elky Clark, cyclist Tommy Chambers and footballers Andrew Cunningham and Jimmy McGrory.
